Installation of DME Devices at Tivat and Podgorica Airports

Investment Worth Around Half a Million Euros Financed by SMATSA

The installation of a DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) device began today on the approach to Tivat Airport, allowing aircraft pilots to determine the direct distance between their aircraft and the ground-based device, according to a statement from Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services (SMATSA).

They stated that the installation of a second DME device on the approach to Podgorica Airport is planned for next week.

“The manufacturer of both devices is the renowned European company Thales, and this conventional air navigation system is installed on the approaches to all major airports in Europe,” the statement said.

It is planned that the project will be completed by March 15.

“The implementation will be carried out by SMATSA’s expert aviation technical staff with the support of representatives from the equipment manufacturer,” the statement added.

Before both devices are put into operational use at locations near Montenegrin airports, a Commissioning Flight Check will be conducted.

“This process will verify the new equipment using a specialized aircraft for the calibration of radionavigation systems,” SMATSA representatives stated.

With this implementation, the new equipment for air traffic control systems will replace the existing devices that have been in operation since 2010.

The investment, worth approximately half a million euros, is financed by SMATSA in accordance with its investment and financial plan.
