Description

National Park Durmitor is considered to be one of the most picturesque and attractive places in Montenegro. Since ancient times, these places have been famous for their unique landscapes, untouched nature and abundance of flora and fauna. Thanks to such a rare heritage, in 1952 Durmitor was declared a national park.

Located in the north-west of Montenegro, the park occupies most of the Durmitor mountain range, covering an area of 39,000 hectares. Among the 48 peaks of the mountain range with a height of more than 2000 meters, the highest peak is Bobotov Kuk with a height of 2525 meters above the sea level. In this place is situated a well-known ski center. Durmitor National Park has 18 glacial lakes located at an altitude of more than 1500 meters. The mountain lakes of Durmitor give a special charm to these places. The largest and most attractive of them – Black Lake (Crno jezero) is located near the main city – Žabljak.
The mountain rivers of the national park are also its indisputable decoration. The Tara River Canyon is known not only for its record-breaking size, but also for the amazing beauty of these places. Second in size only to the Grand Canyon in the United States, it has become a place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists and extreme sports enthusiasts. For example, the famous bridge on Tara, 149 meters high, annually becomes the starting point for skydivers who have chosen one of the most exciting and dangerous types of parachuting – base jumping.
You will drive along the canyons of three rivers – Moraca, Tara and Piva – enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the local landscapes. Mountain ranges, waterfalls, untouched nature and clean air will not leave you indifferent to these amazing places. On the shore of the glacial lake “Crno Jezero”, located at the foot of the highest mountain Bobotov Kuk, you can have lunch in a cozy national restaurant and take a break in the coolness of the northern forest.
